In
my work I strive to attain a balance between natural elements
and man made or manufactured elements, keeping my manipulation
of the natural pieces to a minimum to enhance the beauty and
increase the interest of the new object. We are all consumers
and as such create masses of waste. My work aspires to bring
recycling and reuse of otherwise wasted materials to an art
form, in an attempt to raise awareness in all of us to rethink
our society's throw away consumerist attitudes. If any given
object has reached the end of its intended purpose there are
still a myriad of possibilities for the reuse of that object,
whether as functional or decorative pieces. Both of which
can and do enhance the quality of life for us all.
In
this piece, the stone element is literally balance on end,
being supported by the manufactured cast iron element, illustrating
our society's grasping hold over the precarious balance of
the natural world. The copper lined central hole represents
a portal of sorts, through which can flow ideas, transformations,
it's a window to different worlds, a framework through which
change can occur. The piece is intended as a marker of a crossroads,
both literally and figuratively. One which I hope will speak
to viewers through, shape, texture and form to communicate
the richness of possibility. Where there is imbalance, balance
can be achieve, magic happens.
